BALI, INDONESIA – Bali is strengthening its commitment to sustainable development by integrating climate action, biodiversity conservation and green economic opportunities into the island’s broader development agenda.
The direction was highlighted by Bali Governor Wayan Koster during the Indonesia Carbon and Biodiversity Summit 2026, held at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali, on 8 September 2026. In his presentation, “Aksi Iklim Bali: Regulasi, Implementasi, dan Peluang Kolaborasi” (Bali Climate Action: Regulation, Implementation and Collaboration Opportunities), Governor Koster outlined Bali’s approach to building a greener and more sustainable economy while maintaining the island’s cultural values and environmental integrity.
For the international business events community, this direction further strengthens Bali’s positioning as a destination where meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions can be combined with sustainability, cultural authenticity and meaningful community engagement.
“Bali’s approach to sustainability is rooted in Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali, maintaining harmony between people, nature and culture. Climate action is not simply an environmental programme, but part of a broader vision for the island’s future.”
Sustainability Rooted in Balinese Wisdom
Bali’s approach to sustainability is closely connected with Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali, a Balinese philosophy that emphasizes maintaining harmony between people, nature and culture.
This philosophy provides an important foundation for Bali’s development, linking environmental protection with community wellbeing and sustainable economic growth.
Climate action is therefore being approached not simply as an environmental programme, but as part of a broader vision for Bali’s future.
For meeting planners, this philosophy can provide a meaningful framework for designing events that incorporate local culture, environmental responsibility and community-based experiences.
From cultural immersion and responsible incentive programmes to sustainability-themed conferences and corporate social responsibility activities, Bali offers opportunities to create business events with a stronger sense of purpose.
Building on Bali’s Natural Assets
Bali possesses a diverse range of natural and environmental assets that provide a foundation for its emerging green economy.
According to the Bali Provincial Government, the island currently has approximately 45 MWp of installed solar power capacity, around 17,225 electric two- and four-wheel vehicles, and 302 public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLU) distributed across Bali’s nine regencies and cities.
Bali also has significant blue carbon potential, with approximately 2,330 hectares of mangrove ecosystems and around 1,307 hectares of seagrass meadows.
In agriculture, approximately 52,909 hectares of rice fields are reported to have adopted organic farming practices, representing around 82% of Bali’s total rice-field area. The island also has approximately 131,171 hectares of forest, including protected and conservation areas.
Together, these resources provide opportunities for initiatives related to blue carbon, renewable energy, agricultural carbon, biodiversity conservation and sustainable land management.
Three Strategic Areas for Collaboration
The Bali Provincial Government has identified three key areas for potential carbon-related collaboration:
• Blue Carbon – leveraging the potential of mangrove and seagrass ecosystems while ensuring environmental protection and community benefits.
• Solar Energy – expanding renewable energy infrastructure as part of Bali’s transition towards cleaner energy. Initial opportunities of approximately 300 MWp have been identified, with potential expansion to 700–1,200 MWp.
• Agricultural Carbon – developing opportunities related to organic agriculture, soil carbon and biodiversity.
The development of these sectors is intended to involve collaboration among government, investors, project developers, international standards organisations, academics, communities and other stakeholders. The Bali Government has also emphasized that such development must remain within the appropriate regulatory framework and protect environmental and community interests.
Opportunities for Sustainable Business Events
For international meeting planners and business event organisers, Bali’s sustainability agenda creates opportunities to go beyond conventional meetings and conferences.
Event programmes can potentially incorporate sustainable venue and event practices, low-impact transportation and mobility, community-based cultural experiences, nature and biodiversity activities, responsible incentive programmes, corporate ESG and CSR initiatives, sustainability-themed conferences and forums, visits to environmental and conservation projects, renewable-energy and sustainable agriculture experiences, and local cultural and heritage programmes.
These experiences can be incorporated into association conferences, corporate meetings, incentive programmes, exhibitions and international forums, depending on the objectives and sustainability requirements of each event.
A Destination Where Business Meets Purpose
The Indonesia Carbon and Biodiversity Summit itself demonstrates Bali’s ability to host high-level discussions around climate action, carbon, biodiversity and sustainable development. Its setting in Nusa Dua also highlights Bali’s established capability to bring together international-standard venues, hospitality, professional event services and destination experiences.
Bali’s distinctive advantage lies in the combination of world-class hospitality infrastructure, international accessibility, unique culture, natural landscapes and a growing sustainability agenda.
For international meeting planners, this creates an opportunity to design events that deliver not only business outcomes, but also meaningful experiences, environmental awareness and positive connections with the destination and its communities.
As Bali continues to develop its green economy, the island is positioning sustainability as an integral part of its destination proposition—creating new possibilities for business events that connect people, purpose, culture and place.
