Denpasar, Bali — The Denpasar City Government has intensified its efforts to promote sustainable tourism by strengthening waste management initiatives across Bali’s hospitality and tourism sectors. Through the Denpasar Tourism Office, local authorities convened leaders from the hotel, restaurant, café, catering (HORECA), and tourism destination sectors to support source-based waste management initiatives during a forum held at Dharma Negara Alaya on Friday, 8 May 2026.
The gathering highlighted a collective commitment from Bali’s tourism industry stakeholders to support environmentally responsible operations and reinforce Bali’s positioning as a sustainable world-class destination for leisure and MICE tourism.
The event was attended by Bali Governor Wayan Koster, Denpasar Mayor I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara, Vice Mayor I Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa, environmental officials, tourism leaders, and representatives from major hospitality businesses across Bali.
Speaking during the forum, Mayor Jaya Negara stated that the Denpasar City Government continues to accelerate source-based waste management programs through multi-sector collaboration. He also announced plans for periodic environmental audits within tourism businesses, including sustainability and CHSE-related evaluations, to ensure consistent implementation of responsible waste management practices.
Governor Dr Wayan Koster reaffirmed that waste management remains one of Bali’s top strategic priorities, noting that approximately 41 percent of Bali’s waste is generated by the hospitality sector. He emphasized that sustainable tourism can only be achieved through strong collaboration between government, industry stakeholders, and local communities.
The Governor also praised Denpasar’s progress in waste sorting and management, with the city reportedly achieving more than 80 percent waste segregation compliance.
Addressing tourism industry representatives, Governor Koster stressed that Bali’s global reputation as a premier tourism and MICE destination depends not only on service excellence and infrastructure, but also on environmental responsibility and sustainable destination management.
“If Bali wishes to remain a leading international tourism destination, environmental sustainability — particularly waste management — must become a shared responsibility across all sectors,” he stated.
The initiative reflects Bali’s growing commitment to aligning its tourism development with global sustainability standards, an increasingly important consideration for international meeting planners, incentive organizers, conference hosts, and event professionals seeking environmentally responsible destinations.
